Statistics have shown a significant increase in the number of people misusing both legal and illegal substances. Prolonged use can lead to serious psychological damage such as:
- Depression
- Aggression
- Dependency
- Impairment of judgment
This is of great concern particularly if an individual’s capacity to take care of dependants (i.e. children) is diminished.
Increasingly the UK legal system is utilising the results obtained from human hair samples over that of blood or urine samples due to a number of advantages. Not only do hair samples provide a longer ‘window of detection’* eliminating the need for costly and disruptive regular urine testing. But they can also help differentiate between one-off users and persistent substance abusers.
All Samples are initially screened for substances of interest or their by-products. Positive results are then confirmed by GC/LC-MS or GC/LC-MSMS for legally defensible results.
* Human hair grows on average 1cm per month, therefore for every cm of hair sample will provide a window of approximately one month.
